It's already sweltering here, and I had frozen too many eggs without shells for baking, to close the freezer lid. So, I peeled the baggie off a frozen blob, and put it out, thinking the flock would go after it after it started thawing a bit. Nope, they knocked it out of the bowl and chiseled it away in no time. I know some will say don't feed raw eggs, and I do usually cook them. But the blob was not recognizable, and I've had many occasions when chickens have found accidentally broken eggs, and gooble them, yet have never eaten any whole eggs from the nests. Depends on the flock, I guess.

Chickens won't start breaking their eggs open and eating them because they've been fed eggs. They start eating their eggs because they're lacking quality protein, and/or water. I've always fed eggs, right out of the nest, and never have egg eaters. Anything that's cracked or has a small hole (from a toenail, I figure) gets thrown right onto the ground here.

Same here.,..I will not/cannot eat eggs, my hens eggs rather, after 6 or 7 years of seeing every possible form of embryonic nightmare in every stage of decomp. Bleck. But happy egg eating to everyone else, tee-hee. No really, store bought eggs, no problem, even though yes I know 3 months old nowhere near fresh, blah blah, but back to the issue (no pun) at hand, or claw, Having said I don't eat my eggs, my chickens guineas and turkeys have zero problem eating them. I routinely toss them an egg which splatters on the ground and they then happily snorkel down. Point is I have not ever had a habitual egg eater. Oh with one eggception, Clucky, my Australorp was the solitary purveyor of the ovum. Possibly because I rescued her from the ghetto (she was living on the mean streets in town by my mother in law's house. So I don't believe all chickens are egg eaters or that feeding them fresh raw eggs will turn them into such. Chickens are opportunistic eaters and will readily trash compactor their way through any and every thing they deem edible. They seem to be able to determine in most cases I have witnessed if something is inedible. Bugs anyway. I've seen them turn away and shake their heads as if the item stunk.

I just posted this in the meatbird section under a different thread about feed supplementing... but since someone started this thread... Frozen egg yolk with crushed egg shells on top. Although usually I put it in the fridge when I do this I was out of room in the Fridge for a whole pie pan so it went in the freezer overnight and on a 95 degree day it was quite the treat. I do not eat egg yolks and a recipe called for 20 or 30 egg whites. Since I cook at night after I lock the coops and shower I had no birds available to eat the yolks and made this frozen yolk pie.
