Egg production down?

Hello all!

I have noticed lately that my egg production is down.

I usually get about 13 eggs a day give or take, and I'm getting maybe half that.

We live in South Carolina and have been under a heat wave. I feel like maybe that's when it started. We had one day where it was 107.

My girls free-range and we have shade, dirt baths, a wet area and plenty of water to cool off. They also have a fan in their coop.

Anything I can do to help egg production? They're on layer feed, no change in diet besides adding fruits and veggies ice pops in the heat.

Is this normal?

I live in Texas, and always see a drop in egg production during the months where heat is excessive. I put ice blocks in the water, have fans on the coop and run, as well as misters. This helps keep them "safe" in the heat, but the heat stress - IMO - decreases the egg laying.

If you return to normal temps for your area, and the extreme heat was a fluke, they will probably start laying just fine.

Thank you! I don't care terribly about the loss of eggs, just want to make sure they're OK. They're acting completely normal, are foraging and lord knows their appetites are great.

I don't remember this happening last summer but this one is definitely hotter.

It’s the heat. Egg production creates internal heat and when it’s hot they slow down laying so they do not overheat internally. At 107 temperatures I’m surprised you are getting much of anything from them.
