I read that you can feed your chickens egg shells for a source of calcium. I started to give them crushed up shells in their food, but now I am scared it may be hurting them. Is it ok to feed crushed up egg shells to your chickens???
Please let me know!

We use to. What we do is to blend it really really powder-like. then we add them to any food that they eat. seems effective too.

Too much calcium is not good for the kidneys. And layer feed often has already enough calcium in the feed. If you give all flock its important to provide extra calcium. I give all flock because I have older hens that don't lay much anymore. If you're chickens don't lay much in winter its also better to give all flock that time of the year.

I crumble the egg shells and give it on the side mixed with the oyster shell and grinding stones.
This way the chickens do not over eat the amount of calcium they need.

I feed back egg shells all the time - just lightly crush/smash and toss into the run.

I don’t mix it with their feed so they can decide if they need more calcium or not.

I give oyster shells with layer feed to many egg bound dead birds
