I'm so excited! I just now heard the egg song coming from my backyard! My red stars and wlh's are 16 weeks and 2 days old. I suspect "Pretty Girl" is the singer since she (one of my red stars) is the only one so far with a good comb and wattles. They are BRIGHT red while the otjers are still pinky yellowish and not as pronounced. Does anyone know how long after a short rendition of the egg song should the 1st egg appear?
Good Lord I'm EGGCITED!

Never mind... I figured it was getting close so I went to clean out the nest boxes and..... there it was...a beautiful, brown, perfect, bigger than I expected 1st egg! I wish I could upload the pic from my phone! Computer is down at the moment so I can't post it from there :( whaaaa I so want to share my eggcitment!

Congrats on the new first egg!! I wanted to do a happy dance when I got my first one :)
But my first came from 4 adopted older hens .. Not the ones I'm raising so I have a question,
What is the behavior before they start to lay? I have 9 almost 16 week olds, three are making nests and sitting, covering up the eggs from my bigger girls grrrr which I found this morning,I thought I only got one yesterday and as it turns out I had more.
Is this behavior pre laying behavior?

Thanks
Stephanie

Thank you :)

I'm not sure about your hens behavior. I am a complete newbie lol. But it certainly sounds like it could be. I have 4 hens that sleep together in one nest box, all the other 14 sleep on the roosts. I was surprised that the egg was unattended. When I was a kid and collected the neighbors eggs while they were away I had to take them from under the hens. From what I can see all chickens do things differently. The only things that clued me in were their age, and hearing the egg song. I suspect the one was my "Pretty Girl" since she is the only one with a full comb amd wattles., but I could be wrong, I just read a post where is was a less mature looking bird that layed the guy's first egg.

Yea, I only have two with big wattles on their heads, two others are laying and they have very small ones.
As far as I see all my hens are sleeping together in the nest at night, although I don't check way after dark, maybe I should just to see.

My nest is too tall so they are sleeping in there, haven't had a problem with dirty eggs because of it, but now having the problem of them being covered up.
I am planning new nesting boxes lower than the original one, putting them underneath, maybe that it will not work but going to try anyway, something very simple is all.

Well, I guess I will find out soon what they are up too, :)
