I have a hen that was soiling the nest with what looked like very loose poops and then i found a soft shell egg that was broken. I bathed her in epsom salts and kept her inside for a few days. She did not lay again, and I couldn't feel any eggs inside, so I returned her to the flock since she seemed ok. She acts ok - but didn't lay for awhile. Then she laid this very large egg. Not normal looking with excess calcium on one end and an odd shape. I broke it open and it contained something that looked like lash egg in a shell.
I wish I’d taken a photo. Do I treat her as if its lash egg? Do they get better? Is she contagious?

Thank you for any advice.

She is not contagious. She is having difficulty in the reproductive department. This can be caused by several things. It could be as benign as a hiccup or it could be a reproductive disorder. Many production breeds are prone to reproductive disorders.

Reproductive disorders are not curable, but they also do not have to be immediately lethal either.

Give her some calcium citrate - 400-600 mg table with vit d3. You can get this at any corner drug store or walmart. Give this to her for 5-7 days and that may be all she needs.

If it is a reproductive infection then she will need antibiotics. You will need to keep an eye on her for signs of an infection (yellow urates, listlessness, etc). Amoxicillan what I see on this site as recommended for reproductive issues. For standard breeds give 250 mg 2x daily for 7 to 10 days.

This is what you are looking for in the calcium. This will help her with contractions and moving things along in the reproductive department.

Thank you. She doesn’t act sick so I’ll try calcium first. I was thinking she might have (salpingitis?) which I read was not curable. She is a heritage breed - two years old.
