I have an egg bound chicken. I felt the egg inside of her and it broke. She passed some albumin, but never the yolk or shell. We can feel the shell inside, but cannot get it out. What should we do? It has been a week since the egg broke.

Put some lubricant on your fingers and try very very carefully to slip a finger inside and slide the pieces of shell out. Be very careful so that you dont cause the egg shell to cut her insides. Patience and a helper to hold her (without squeezing.... prevents breathing) will go a long way.

Then keep an eye on her for a few days. I would separate her because if she continues to leak egg out of her vent, or if there is any blood on the vent then other birds will peck at her vent and could even kill her.

Search emergency section for "internal layer" or "internal laying" and "egg bound" for more info.

Good luck,

Chel

we did that we can feel the shell but we can't get it to come out. She has been in our basement for 3 week now and we have been lubing her up everyday but the fragments are still stuck inside. We can just barely feel them between all the fold of skin in there.
