I let my 6 Hen flock out tonight while mowing. After Awhile I noticed my 16 mo RSL was not moving about like the others. I rode the tractor over and picked her up. She was kind of puffed up and not moving. First I noticed her crop was empty. Then I felt her rear and could feel an egg .Not sticking out but just inside.
I've never had an egg bound hen before, these are my first hens ,I raised them from day old chicks. To say we are attached to them is an understatement. My 2 boys and wife love them so much. So obviously a hen in distress is a big deal in our house.
We brought her inside and soaked her in warm water in a tub. After about 10 minutes I began massaging her opening. I was able to gently help her push it out. I was surprised how easy it came out.
We took her back down and returned her to her run and coop.It occurred to me she maybe hadn't had any water. I gave her electrolytes with a dropper but she only had a few swallows. She is just standing and her vent seems to spasm a little. She has this "what the heck just happened "look.
What else can I do for her?I guess I expected her to return to normal but it obviously took a lot out of her. I'm watching now to see if she can climb the ramp up to the roost.
The egg was a large one but I wouldn't call it huge. She is on layena pellets and free choice oyster shell. Also acv in her water.
Will she recover from this?
Thanks for reading.
