.........and I have been getting a lot of advice which I'm not sure is right from friends and neighbors. One friend told me that my chickens won't lay the first year and if I do get one egg around Sept.- Oct. months. Then I have a neighbor who is also new at BYC raising plus she also decided to get ducks as well (good for her). I was so excited my girls gave me my first egg and I told her about it and I asked her if it would be good to eat? She told me her chickens have been laying but they have been tossing away the eggs since they are not ready. I haven't toss my eggs and I have 5 eggs so far kept in room temperature in a egg carton, haven't wash them, pretty much clean. I don't have a rooster, I live in City limits and you can have one. Someone told me I need use the candle method, but I don't have an incubator not raising baby chicks.........not yet.

BIG QUESTION are my eggs safe to eat or should I toss them out like my neighbor did?

It's only one of three of my chicken. I have two New Hampshire Reds and I think the other one is a Barneveld, however its one of my NHR laying an egg.

This is the first July 13 my boyfriend found the egg.

First of all your egg is not fertile without a rooster. so my suggestion is for you to treat yourself to a GREAT OMELET FOR YOUR NEXT BREAKFAST. Then tell your SILLY NEWBIE chicken friends that that you agree with them that their eggs are not done yet..... TELL THEM THAT YOU ARE WILLING TO TAKE THEM OFF THEIR HAND FOR AN EXPERIMENT YOU ARE DOING.... DON'T ELABORATE OR EXPLAIN

Fry them up quick and remove all trace of evidence.

Eggs are safe to eat. The fact that they started laying means they are ready. I don't know where did your neighbor got that weird idea.

No need to candle the eggs. Why would you if you are not raising chicks? They aren't fertile in the first place since you do not have a rooster.

Goodluck!
