Eggs Breaking

My hens have just started laying. My problem is that they kick all the hay out of the nesting box beforehand though, and about half the time the egg ends up cracked or broken when it plops down on the bare wood. Is there anything I can do to stop this? Maybe the shells will get tougher as they get more practice laying?

Can you put a board up to hold the hay in if they are wooden boxes? What are they eating? Starting out laying eggs will be small and some may be thin shelled for awhile while their bodies get all the kinks out.
