I have an inexperienced broody who was sitting on four eggs. One hatched perfectly, one looks like it has pipped, but two are crushed.

Since she was pecking at them and stepping on them, I brought them in and put them in the incubator with increased humidity. They are still breathing and chewing.

Anything else I can do to help them survive?

Just have to wait and see. The bloody one is a bit worrying but I've had a couple chicks hatch with blood like that and they were okay. Can you see if the yolk is absorbed or not?

The main thing to worry about is the membranes drying out and making it hard for the chicks to move and finish hatching. If you see them trying to kick out the rest of the way and struggling too much you should give them a hand.

The bloody one has a big belly and no sign of the yolk sac, but is still chewing. She's basically on the halfshell.

I've been taking off the trash in pieces--one side is basically cleared. The other side is a whole mess of crushed eggshell and blood. Not sure how to handle that.

The other one is still chewing and has made no effort to come out.

Edit: using a q'tip and veg oil to get pieces off. She's been up on her feet, briefly, but still a long way to go. Still has blood in the umbilicus so I can't cut that off yet.

The umbilicus came off on its own.

Some pieces of eggshell and such remain that appear to possibly be embedded, either in her skin or other junk.

That red patch over her shoulder turned out to be a wing, held in place by a band of dried blood. Once I got the blood off, the wing snapped back into place.

Both looking great this morning, happy and active. I took them out and gave them to the experienced broody, who heard them, started talking to them, and they settled in, just like that.

I expected that would happen. She has never rejected a chick.
