Last thursday my son came into the house after walking the dogs and checking the chickens and was very excited to tell me that there were two eggs in the floor of the coop. Happily collected, I awaited more. It's been 5 days, no more eggs. Any thing to say on this subject? I am very new to chickens and no, I didn't expect them to suddenly sync up and begin laying in a coordinated way but this seems weird.

Oh, boy! Well, expect them to sync. . . quickly! I get an average of 8 eggs a days from 10 hens. There were maybe 60-days this year that I got none or just one. How often they lay is completely dependent on a number of things: What breed are they? What foods do they eat? How much exposure to natural daylight do they get?

Also, be prepared for them not only to lay at the same time, but wanting to use the exact same spot to do it! lol I went to check on my girls the other-day and three of them were in the same nest box! @_@ They have four available, but always choose just one or two to lay in for that day. They truly are amusing! :)

Are they confined to coop and run or free ranging?
Are the nests easy to access, both getting up and getting down?

New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out. Putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nest might help show them where to lay. They may scratch around in the nests for weeks before laying. Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.
