I have been raising hens for eggs for almost 4 years. I have Rhodes Island Reds, Buff Orphington, Gold Sex Link, Barred Rock and Americauna. My older group will turn 4 yrs old in October and the younger ones are just over a year old. I ran across Backyard Chickens on Facebook. I have enjoyed reading the different threads on a variety of subjects. One of my hens has started having issues with a small hole in the shell, it's not hard enough to be safe to eat, so I don't eat them. Was wondering if anyone has ever experienced this same issue and if so what causes it?

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!:frow Glad you joined the flock! BYC is a very helpful and informative about poultry! Looks to me the chicken pecked a hole in it. She definitely didn't lay an egg with a perfectly formed hole like that. You might have to try and break to habit if she gets as far as egg eating. Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

Hello and welcome! I am experiencing the same issues here. Two of my hens turned 4 this month, and I suspect the one I’m having issues with is one of those. The shells are a lot more fragile. They are also rough instead of smooth. I’m finding holes in a lot of them, as well as a few shelless ones, laid from the roosting bar. I believe the holes are due to the weak shell, and the birds trying to push them underneath themselves, as they do. To remedy my issue, i am giving out less treats, putting their layer feed outside during the day as well as inside 24/7. Mind don’t ever seem to ear the oyster shells, but they do eat crumbled eggshells, which im also trying to give them more often. Next time I’m at the feed store, I’m gojng to look for an egg enhancer supplement I read about elsewhere. Good luck with your issue!
