Electric fence and coop open at night?

Maybe not unless the chicken wire is replaced real quick with hardware cloth or something lots stronger.

Not an issue so far.

Yeah, but finding out it is an issue is never pretty.

Can't argue with that. I also can't argue with using hardware cloth. I'm just pointing out the concept of having a ventilation area set low so the birds can get the same effect as being by a door, not counseling the use of chicken wire.

For me, though, I'm just not all that worried about it.

Understoond, out here we have coyotes, every so often someone's purse dog gets taken in view of it's owner, not pretty.

I never close the door of the coop, even at night. The door opens to a run, which is locked at night. It's a few dog kennels linked together to form a bigger pen. The pen is of chainlink fencing, six feet tall, covered with a netting. So the chickens have access to the coop as well as the run, all night.

It was breached once two years ago, by a raccoon. He untied the netting and made a small hole for himself. I reinforced the netting since then (plus he was dispatched) and it hasn't been breached since. So make sure you have your run secured well if you choose to leave your coop door open. Make sure there are no gaps in your fencing, and make sure your netting is on tight.
