Electric Fence Reality

Quote:
WOW you must have the dumbest or laziest deer in the world. I have a triple wire 3 D electric fence (out wire at 30 inches 2 inner wires 30 inches away at 24 and 48 inches) and the deer just jump over it.

The reason they jump over it is that they can visualize it, it has bulk. A single strand with low visibility must be investigated....with a nose. They can easily jump over something they can see and sense to be a certain height. You may be right about our deer but it only takes one time to teach them....they nose it to gauge the height, they get zapped, they don't come near it again. Lesson learned. This actually works in any part of the country in which you choose to use it.

I guess, around here, we just learned to be smarter than the average deer......and put up a single strand instead of an elaborate fencing system that doesn't work.

I actually sent trap mine. I did try a single wire and they just jumped it too. So I went with something more elaborate. Actually recommended by the DNR officer I had visit to see all the damage these horned rats do.

I think my major problem it that my 10 acres is in the middle of about a billion acres of farm land. I'm trying to reforest and have planted thousands of tree. It's a real refuge for them and a HUGE incentive to take an electrical hit now and them. I have a wire that runs 8,000 volts so it will sting. In fact it nearly knocked my down two nights ago when I was adjusting one of the lines... Note to self TURN THE WIRE OFF FIRST!!!!

I am now six months into my first flock and thought i would report that I am using a 3 strand 10,000 volt electric fence at 5 inches, ten inches and 18 inches. I haven't had any problems with coyotes or coons and the chickens stay within the boundary. I open the coop at 7 am and shut them in at dusk. everything seems to work just fine.

I lost 3 cats to coyotes, but no chickens.

I have done this too and forgot to turn off the electricity and touched a fence post WOW I got a good shock.

I have used both two and three wires and have the wires about 4 to 6 inches apart with 6000+ voltage. I have had it for about 2 years now. I originally purchased it as a neighborhood mutt dug under my fence and killed one of my girls. I also use the wire that if some weeds or grass touch it will still work. With some wire if one blade of grass or anything touches the wire it won't work. I bought a power supply that is good for a mile of wire. It may be an over kill but I would rather have too much power than not enough. Also I have a very long ground rod that is probably about 7 ft of it is under ground with 3 ft above ground. I know some people who use a small power supply and the wire that shorts out if anything touches it so I did a lot of research before I invested in mine. I probably have 1/4 mile of wire. One of my birds touched it and she took off like she had seen a ghost. I have never seen her move so fast. I think I'm lucky it didn't kill her. I never shut the pop door in the coop and so far have not had any problems. I have had heard critters touch the wire and I guarantee they will not be back.
