Electrolytes?

This is probably a dumb question, but what are electrolytes? Someone told me that you should put it in their water to make up for what one of our chickens lost because she has diarrhea.

scientific meaning for it confuses me but here it is

so here is a understandable meaning for it and as to why we all us electrolytes for chickens

it says for broilers but after reading the full page makes alot of sense to me why i add it to my chickens water at least once a week here

we have been dealing with hot humid weeks here...until last 2 days we had zip for rain really here and has been really hot in the sun
