Hi BYC!
I purchased a dozen Sussex eggs from a local breeder the other day. They were packaged up when I collected them, so I didn’t inspect them until I got home. Half of the eggs are extremely elongated like torpedo shapes. These weren’t cheap eggs, and the seller apparently has a good reputation and a large flock of her own.
I have hatched several batches of my own eggs, and I have one hen who lays slightly elongated eggs, though not as badly shaped as the ones I bought. None of hers have ever hatched for me, most of them have quit around day 7, though a few made it to lockdown but never hatched.
I emailed the seller, politely asking about the shape but haven’t heard back yet.
I set the eggs anyway, since they cost me a pretty penny, but I’m wondering if they have a good chance or not.
Note to self; inspect every egg upon pick up in future.
