In the Brooder
Hi everyone,
We just moved to 11 acres in Western Washington and I am busily preparing for my first chickens! Right now I'm in the planning/graphing/constantly-drawing-stuff-on-napkins stage. We have a lot of woods (and predators!) but the garden area is very extensive, though neglected. I have decided to put a "chicken moat" around the garden, and the coop inside it with a protected passageway from the pop door into the "moat."
I will post pictures in March or April when it is all up and running. (fingers crossed)
Our chicken objectives are
-fun
-lots of nutritious eggs, of different colors!
-garden help (manure, occasional weed or bug control inside the garden)
I want to put together a mix of breeds totaling about a dozen. My wish list changes constantly, but for now it looks like
2 Buff Orpingtons
3 Barred Rock
3 Ameraucanas, or however you spell/say that...
2 Red star or Rhode I. reds
2 Marans
2 White leghorns
I have a lot to learn, and I am so glad to be a part of this community now!
