My friend called for my help with a chick, probably 4 or 5 weeks old, who was severely pecked around his vent. He got stuck between two layers of poultry wire during the night, apparently.

ANYWAY... his backside is pecked to the bone, so the hole through his pelvic bone is exposed and the vent is loose and can get down inside the abdominal cavity. Is there any hope? Would it even be worth trying to put a stitch or two up above his vent to hold it in place so he will at least not defecate into his abdominal cavity?

Any other ideas?

TIA

Have you got enough skin for a closer? I may not be the guide for you this late, but I have had limited succsess with it. (And my wife it a doctor) I've come to the point that cull verses endless rehab isn't good with a 2$ bird. I am not trying to be crewl but I have so many that 21 days from any culling, there are many more. If you're dead set on rescuing this bird, you need a perfect aseptic tech. And someone not squeemish to assist.
I wish you luck.

No, there is no skin to close it with. All I can think of to do is put a stitch to hold the vent up where it will stick out the opening. I told her I don't think the chick will make it, and she should put it out of its misery, but it's her favorite and she wants to try. She's headed to town to pick up some dissolvable sutures to try. We coated it thoroughly with antibiotic ointment, and tried to get it to drink some, but that's all I could think of to do. I got my phone out to get a picture, but it had gone to sleep in my pocket.

The baby died just as I got there to help her this evening. What a relief! I've never seen anything like that injury, poor little thing.

Sorry about the death. But it's the reason I don't work to hard to save the ones I know won't make it, or if they do and thier quality of life is low.

I lost a roo a couple of years ago because the other chicks got him trap behind the waterer. This is the saddest thing, it makes you want to sell the others. So sorry you and your friends had to go through it.
