I would leave it open to air, but she needs to stay separated from others at least through a dog crate with her own food and water. Stop the styptic. Spray the area with either chlorhexidene, Vetericyn (or other brand wound spray,) and apply plain Neosporin Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice a day.

How old is the hen? Has she been laying eggs or having any issues? Check closely for any maggots(fly strike) if flies are out now. Do they have enough room in their coop and run? What are you feeding them?

Barnee, the Barnevelder is 1 year, yes she lays regularly . No other issues, I got home fairly late just before sunset when I usually go out and give them their scratch treat and noticed them following & pecking at her when I saw her red, bleeding butt that was fine at this morning's feeding. They have fresh greens each morning, cool cleaning and quality pellets available all day. Large open air covered top coop(10'x20') to run (2/3 fresh hay area and 1/3 sandy soil to bathe with various level perches and nest boxes (10 hens) all are healthy and coop is bug free (I did see a moth tonight). No flies around; they're rare here anyway. I cleaned the wound, applied vaseline to sooth the skin since even my own dermatologists over past 25 years (I've had all types of skin cancers) tells me not to use triple antibiotics but plain vaseline instead, then resprayed the wound with Theracyn poultry wound & skin care to remove the extra "sticky" ointment; gave her fresh hay in coop ER (huge dog crate) with fresh food & water and kissed her goodnight.

Any other suggestions? I'm worried because the area is so large and the feathers pulled back so far as to whether it will heal properly. Only the top feather layer was torn; underneath wasn't penetrated.
