I had 7 girls untill a few days ago. Three of them are younger chickens and 4 older chickens about 3 years old. I doubt that they are laying. But they're my daughters pets.
Last week I had one of the 4 older brown chickens die. She seemed to be puffed up and listless. Her eyes went shut all the time and it seemed that she was sleeping. In a matter of a week she died.
Now I have another one doing the same thing. She also has wet poops.
Anyone:( have a handle on this problem?
Please let me know. Seems to be a virus of sorts?
Thanks.

The older three are the standard Reds. The two Barred rocks and the Auraucana are doing ok.

The first things to check are her vent and her crop. Check vent to make sure she is not clogged up and clean her up. Check crop to make sure she is not impacted or has a sour crop. The crop will be bulged out if its impacted. Also, she may be eggbound. Has she laid any eggs lately?

defiently agree - you got to it first

I was thinking that 3 year olds are still quite young or at least that is what I have experienced, I have 2 that are 4 and 1 that is over 5 years old and still getting eggs

Important questions--
What color and consistency are/were their poops?
Is there any swelling around their eyes, or were they just closed?
Any discharge from nose, eyes, or mouth? If so, does it have an odor?
Any coughing or rattling chests?
Have you checked them for mites and lice in their feathers or dewormed recently?
Have you gotten any new birds or been around any place that would have allowed diseases to come back to your birds, like with poop tracked on your shoes or something?

And just to be sure, they are being fed a regular diet of pellets or crumbles with just a bit of corn or scratch for treats, right?

It's so sad to watch your flock die one by one, I had several diseases go through my old flock and it was heartbreaking. I finally had to get rid of them all and disinfect for several month before starting over fresh.

I doubt that any of the older girls are laying eggs. I get 2 to 3 eggs a day. They seem to be from the younger birds. That's what happens when a newbie buys chickens from a scammer. ( Oh yes, they are about a year and a half old) Hmm. more like 4 and a half.
No, I haven't wormed them and doubtfull that they are eggbound.
It's strange that this thing is travelling so fast. I'm worried about the other chickens. What do you use as a wormer?

They were all well this morning, had their usual crumble and hand full of treats (grain) My daughter fed them some cheese, which they get a kick out of watching them jump up to take it out of her hand. Just this evening they followed me around picking worms as I dug around in the garden. Even the one that's not well had a generous helping of worms. So, her appetite is ok. No discharge from her nose or eyes and no coughing.
Suppose it is a virus? Are the other eggs safe to eat?
Any suggestions as to isolating this chicken? Or is it too late to do this?
