I have 21 hens and 11 roosters. My hens are not laying at all!!! They are only a year old, they are not in a molt, they are allowed outside only under supervision so they are not hiding thier eggs, they have oyster shell and grit, they are given layer ration, they have a large warm but, draft free and well ventilated coop. I had one egg eater but, I was able to break the habit and I know the others are not eating them because, I check for eggs every hour now! There are no predaters that are stealing the eggs. They seem phisically very healthy. My mom wants me to get rid of my roosters because, she thinks they are the problem. They are being wrongly accused! They are not in any way effecting egg production. My chickens are my pets and best friends and I can't imagine life without them but, I also can't afford to keep chickens that won't lay. Please help!!!

How hot is it where you are? Heat can effect egg production.

I'm sorry but, your mom could be very right. You should have at the very least 4 hens per rooster and the best would be 10 hens per rooster. Your poor hens can't get a moments rest. Could you talk your parents into letting you build a coop and run for your extra roos? That's what I did, I set up a bachelor pad for the roos and they are happy as clams :)

Hello and welcome to BYC

It might be that your hens are eating too much. I've heard of cases like that where the hens were so spoiled, they ate too much and wouldn't lay. I found with my own flock if I overfeed, egg production drops. And I also think you have too many roosters. 1 to 4 hens is better.

Thanks for all the input! leadwolf1, I love your bacheler pad idea! I think my parents will allow it. I do realize I have a bad male-female ratio right now but, I am buying 25 or so pullet chicks next spring so, there are more ladies for my guys. I do not believe a person can have to many roosters but, you can have to few hens. I bought my chickens from mcmurray hatchery. One of my hens had pus on her eye a few months ago. It cleared up right away but, could they be carrying something?

If no one has shown symptoms, and it was that long ago, I would say that she either injured her eye or had something in it.

You are welcome for the bachelor pad suggestion...I'm a softie and anything that comes into this house, stays in this house...that includes all the roosters I hatched :)
