Empty eggshell in coop

Hi. Today I found an empty eggshell in the coop. It was right under the perch where they sleep. I expected to find an eggy mess but the bedding was dry. The shell seemed softer than usual. Could hens lay empty eggshells or maybe they ate it… This has never happened before. I have 4 hens that are about 1.5 years old. Thank you.

It is normal for chickens to eat cracked eggs.
