Is anyone here interested in producing chicks from endangered breeds? I thought it might be interesting to raise some for sale to keep the breeds alive. I've checked out the ALBC and found some critical breeds, but I'm not sure that if I get eggs or chicks from a breeder that I'll be getting a pure breed. Any ideas?

I have Salmon Faverolles they are on the critical list. Most breeders on this site are honest and won't sell cross breeds as purebreeds. Let us know what breeds your thinking about I would be happy to point you in the right direction.

Yes I agree most people on here are very honest good sellers and love thier birds and continually work on their stock. What breeds are you interested in? I have Delaware's, and am working on a good flock of those at the moment. There are some gorgeous birds from good reputable breeders here! Good luck finding the birds you want

I've always wanted the Cubalaya...its not on critical..its threatened. I've been looking for over a year now with no luck. Then I see somebody post some hatching eggs, but no pics. I've asked for more info earlier, but no response as of yet. I'm also interested in the Buckeye and Delawares which are both on the critical list. What exactly does "study" mean on the list on ALBC?

I think it's great that you are interesting in preserving endandered breeds, this year I plan to get started on flocks of Black, White, and Mottled Javas who are also endangered and I will work to increase their quality and numbers. Like the others said, most breeders, especaially the ones with rare breeds keep their stock pure and are proud of it, so you shouldn't have a probllm there, just communicate with the breeder for a while and ask for pics and info on the breeding stock, or if possible, go visit them in person and ask what you want. GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!

"Study" basically means they're not quite sure what to do with them yet. They're analyzing the situation. For instance, the Lamona chicken was thought to be instinct, but a couple of breeders were found who are holding onto their flocks. ALBC is trying to determine if they're actual Lamonas and also how they could save the breed.

I'm getting 29 top quality Buckeye chicks in May, and I can't wait (4 cockerels and 25 pullets). Buckeye breeders seem to be coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden. I have a feeling that they'll be moved off of the critical list soon.

The S.P.P.A sends out a breeders list to it's members. This year is the year for the breeder survey to go out to its members to update the listings, from what I read in Backyard Poultry.

Ms. browneyebuttafly, there are a select few cubalaya breeders out there that have quality stock. If you are really serious about being interested in the breed, send me an email.

I have Delaware, Chantecler, and Russian Orloffs...all listed as "critical" by the ALBC. I have worked very hard to get quality birds from quality breeders, and I plan on doing my part to help preserve these breeds.
