Yes they could, raccoons are super intelligent little problem solvers, there really good at climbing and figuring things out, to give to an example, my mother had cat feed on the back porch of her house, she bought this metal trash can that had a bar that slides up to lock the metal lid on, it takes some force to get the thing unlocked and was said to be critter proof lol, it took raccoons 3 nights before they figured it out and every night after until it was moved indoors, I have seen one climb a 2x4 on a fenced in screen porch all the way to the top of the screen, hang upside down crawl threw a small hole in the screen by the roof than pull itself up on a cabinet on my mothers back porch, sit on top of the cabinets, open the cabinets from above and eat stuff from them, I have been amazed at how clever they are, but a nuance non the less. I saw one in person that surprised the crap out of me, I was walking in the woods and saw a big fat ratcoon, it ran to a large oak tree than got quiet, I knew it was just on the other side of the tree, I went to the other side and couldn't find it, I waited, after a few mins heard it climbing on the other side of the tree now, I went to that side and nothing lol waited again not heard it on the opposite side so I ran around the tree and saw only its leg, it knew where I was and was running to the other side faster than I could while changing on the side of this tree 15-20ft high, completely dark also and i was trying to find him with a bright light I had, I have a better understanding for the intelligence of those little guys, I have been really amazed.
