Here goes, egg bound hen - when I insert my gloved hand into the vent I feel one canal/orphus only.

So does the egg come from the same hole as the feces? I know that they are not from the same system - one is digestive, one is reproductive.

When I probe I can feel a number of oval objects, there is a filament or sheath around it. I can't seem to find where it would come out.

Can anyone help me? Are any of you aware of a condition in which the path gets twisted or directed off path?

Am I a thread killer? I am really starting to think so.

I have asked about this poor hen's situation and with the exception of a few helpful comments. I have gotten diddly for responses. Is it that the outcome is usually so poor that noone wants to say that.

I am a member on this board trying to learn from knowledgeable poultry owners in order to help my own chicken community. I have searched, I have researched but I was hoping someone might send me in the right direction.

Thanks.

From the vent both eggs and waste come out, I'm thinking that's what you're asking?

I can tell you if a hen is eggbound granny would "put her out of her misery", but other people have sucessfully removed the lodged egg. The problem is some chickens repeat the problem.

What makes you think she's egg bound? How is she acting? Can you feel the egg externally?

Many have posted about helping egg bound hens. I have dealt with many prolapse but never egg bound, so maybe do a search directly for that.

BTW< dont feel bad, Im a thread killer also.

change your subject line (indicate eggbound) ... I also initially passed your post over for subject lines that seemed to indicate more of an emergency situation. I do not have time to go through each and every post and do "filter" simply on the basis of info in subject lines.
Now to your situation > I do not support an "internal exam" > number one you dont know what you are looking for (as your question indicates) and two what do you hope to achieve by doing so? Often there is an eggbinding situation where you cannot "feel" it and sticking your finger up there may induce the direction of the "contractions" to reverse which will only make things worse. Such an exam is best left to a vet who knows what they are doing.
.... put her in warm bath and gently massage down if she does not object...
> crush a TUM and give to her (mix in with a bit of moist bread and make a few "pellets" of that) > this is an emergency substitute for the calcium gluconate a vet would normally give.

Here are some illustrations to answer your original question:

Thanks DLH and the others for taking the time to respond. I can respect that everyone's time is valuable and do so appreciate helpful responses.

The most recent thread was actually my third attempt at getting help for this bird. The first followed all of the prescribed rules regarding an emergency as the moderators suggest. I got 2 responses - and I do thank those that responded. I posted a 2nd time with an even more urgent request and got 2 posts back.

At this point, I can feel that I have done everything for this bird that can be done. I have soaked her and some materials comes out. She is so huge, the mass is the size of a softball or small melon. Her breathing is being affected and her comb is losing color. She is in a dark area, next to her friendy bird resting.

DLH I actually used your link on this topic that goes to the video of the avian vet showing how to encourage an egg to be relieved from a parrot. When I massaged toward the vent(from the belly) it seemed to move a bit, but I just think this girl was discovered too late.

I wish this neighbor had gone into action about her hens condition before the third week.

Sorry you did not get help sooner. It gets frustrating waiting for help. I wish there was a seperate place for all the jokes, games, religious, etc....... stuff that bumps the important/ER posts off the main page so fast. With almost 40K members and so many posting it really moves peoples posts way too fast. We used to be able to just keep an eye on the front page to read recent topics, but today a new post can be on pg 3 in one minute

I hope your bird gets better
