Entire Flock Gone!

yup this happened to me 3 nights in a row-broke into everything over a 6ft fence-stole my gorgeous huge silkie-my only BO roo-and My hen who who's eggs were pipping the night she got swipped! We now have a jail at night-so I go to bed sleeping easier!

You would probably be a whole lot better off with electrical poultry netting than either traps or a gun. Or both.

Raccoons will carry off dead birds to eat later. And yes, electric fence is good to help repel, but once you are on a coon's nightly rounds, eliminating it is a necessity. Otherwise, it will breed and coons do "teach" their young. Unless you want Ricky Raccoon AND all his offspring checking every night to see if you slip up on your lock up routine, trap and kill the coon.

Sorry about your birds.

i lost some hens to a racoons a few years ago. I lock them up every night, but I also have "twinkling christmas" lights on a timer (on at dusk/off at dawn). I read that the racoons don't like the blinking lights (I think it messes with their eyes?). Also, I found crystalized coyote urine online (don't want to think how they collect) and hung bags around the coop. Coyotes being a preditor of racoons, keep the racoons away just b/c of the smell. I'm not sure if I'm wasting my time with all of this, but I have not had another intrusion since I set all this up.

So sorry for your loss
