We have a BO that is constantly broody during the spring and summer. Last summer, we finally gave it a go and let her sit on some eggs. She managed to hatch 2 out of 6, but the very next day one was gone and the other dead with the mom frantic to get out of the coop. I think maybe a snake might have gotten in to the coop somehow- or maybe even a rat. Anyway, I don't think she purposely abandoned the one as she is very persistent in her broodiness and had seemed very content when they were first hatched.
She is broody again for the first time this season. We want to give it another try but are worried something will get in to the coop somehow. I'd like to give her some eggs to sit on for a few days and then move her at night into a large container in the garage (extra large rubbermaid or the like). Has anyone tried to do this before? Am I losing my mind?
