Currently, we have 2 roosters. One RIR and one WR. We are going to have to probably give both of them up (they are 12wks old) if they begin to crow, since we live in a suburban/urban area. We are really trying to hold onto the WR

as he is my son's chicken, but we'll have to wait and see.

I am wanting to get a few baby chicks before I have to get rid of them, but was wondering do chickens have to crow before they are able to mate successfully? I wasn't sure if there was some sexual maturation that had to occur and crowing was the first step.

Anyone have a rooster who was a dad before he crowed? Thanks for any info

That may be because in some cases the subordinate roos don't always crow. Just wanted to throw that tidbit out there in case anyone was hoping that their roos wouldn't crow!

I had 2 RIR Roos and they both crowed. I think in some cases (where there is more than 1 Roo), the more dominant Roo may be the only one to crow. But you can not control crowing. They will crow when they wanna!

Augustmomx2 ~ I am not sure if you can get fertile eggs before your Roo crows.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in! If you get some time, sit and watch your flock. You would also have to check the eggs for fertiltity. I am not sure when a Roo becomes ..... um .... potent (I don't know how to phrase that!

Sorry to hyjack your thread! I just wanted to make sure people understood that there are the cases where you can have more than one Roo and only one crows. Or the chance that both may crow! (As in my case!

Senior cocky has been crowing for about 2 weeks now, none of the hens (same age) have laid an egg yet (5 months old). So even if he's ready the girls are not.

Now that is the kind of rooster I need. We can legally have them out here, but they follow the same noise ordinances as the city. Gotta figure out how to explain that to a rooster so I can get one!
