Ever spooked your rooster before?

My current 5month old breeder Lav Orp rooster who I'm training not to crow likes to scream and growl when he's mad, frightened or disturbed by anything. I was just throwing some tomatoes from my garden over the fence a couple days ago and one hit him on the head by accident...he wasn't too happy about it and voiced his opinion by letting out a loud scream and some growls. Whoops...
Anyone else accidently spooked your rooster(s) before?

Just how are you training him not to crow?
Yes, I can imagine he wasn't best pleased...
He currently wears a homemade No-Crow velcro collar during the daytime, which doesn't completely eliminate his crowing but does discourage him from doing it and does turn his volume down quite a bit. Then we just utilize lots of random stuff in the yard to keep him busy wanting treats. Any time he crows I just go over, pick him up and hold him for a bit, then put him back down.
