everyone's coops are beautiful but...

do i need to get the plans from dennis if i want to attempt?? someone is selling the exact same coops for 1450 on portlands' craigslist! eek! i like how self-contained it is... all one piece ... i would make the shortened version... would it be that spendy to make?

no where around here carries the playhouse, and itd be like a mansion to my 2! i dont want to bring myself to paying the 299 for the hen yard thing....

Yeah, I forgot about the run for the Lowes playhouse, that would be an additional cost.

If you emailed Dennis at the address shown at the bottom of his BYC coop page, I'd imagine he could answer any questions you might have about building that one.

Good luck!

We just built a small raised coop for our Silkies. We have rustic decor but you could paint this and fix it up very nice. I am decorating with old feed and egg signs and the large coop in the front I am putting tags from each state. (taking a while) also there is room for a sand pit underneath which makes it nice! There is a small ladder they go up and down on the side and a small door with a pulley to open up in the morning and close at night without going into the house. Nesting boxes will be added to the outside when needed and eggs can be gathered from the outside. We included 90 year old windows that open wide for ventilation. We use only hardwire cloth for out run because of many predators in our area. We are adding 4 more in this row so we can run each kind of chicken alone so we can keep breeds together! Such Fun......
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Those are the cutest dog houses I have ever seen! I think either of the 2 large ones would work perfect for your girls. You want to allow room for a nest box and since they recommend 4 square feet per a bird the medium one might be to cramped. The one with the little window on the side could be retro fitted by your handy friend to have a box out style of nest box there.

As for will 2 chickens destroy your yard- chances are good you will have some seriously bare spots pretty fast. If you give them a run, it will be wiped clean in no time. I have 5 ladies who have been in their 8'x20' run for less than a month and it is bare dirt now. It once had very nice grass with just one bare spot where the kiddos sand box had been. I have made a mobile 6'x6' daypen to move them around the yard every now and then to give them a bit of grass again. It is basically a big square made out of 2x2's. It is 2' tall and covered in chicken wire. They are in there no more than 8 hours at a time and have access to chick feed and water the whole time yet at the end of just one day I can definitely see a difference in the grass they were on.
My yard is landscaped too and there are things a chicken shouldn't eat as well as the fact that I like my grass, thus my mobile day pen. Maybe your handy friend could build you a smaller version of one of those as well. When it is not in use I store it on it's side along the privacy fence on the side of my house.

I have had 4 (3 month old) pullets in a yard of 30' x 60' for about 4 weeks now, and I don't see any bare spots yet. But this is Bermuda grass, so it's tuff.

I think that any of those doghouse would be great for two hens.

Yes, the two hens will eat the grass down to bare dirt in the run.

But, you don't need a large run for two hens, so you could keep in neat looking with mulch/pine shavings.
