I too got tired of having to rake the mulch back into my flower beds so I expanded their chicken yard to the back 1/4 of our yard.
I do let them out occasionally to get bugs and weeds when I have time to watch them. But as soon as they start in on the flower beds they go back up and I go around the yard and scoop up any poop they left.
