Excited and flabbergasted at the same time

Hello from Florida. I'm new to Backyard Chickens (obviously :) Somehow, I was convinced to jump into this chicken lifestyle by my kids and hubby. We have 4 chicks about 3 weeks old. I've been told we have 2 Jersey Giants, a Barr Rock and a Buff Orpington. I couldn't tell you if that's true or not because I have absolutely no idea about anything when it comes to Chickens. Other than, I change the hay in their temporary lodgings everyday and freshen up their feed and water after I do that.

I'm thinking of this as our new family adventure. We're also trying to figure out if we have a rooster or not. We live in the city and roosters are a big no-no. Hope to talk to you guys soon. Can't wait to jump right in.

At three weeks the only indication is to keep a close eye on their little combs for it to start reddening up and getting little buds of growth on it. Also watch for any that have an unusual interest in sparring with the other chicks, that's usually a boy. Good luck, you'll be surprised how much you learn!!

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on getting started with your chicken adventures :celebrate Chicken keeping is a fantastic hobby the whole family can enjoy and I'm sure you all will. At three weeks it is a little early to determine gender but should be ok for the breed. You could post some pics in the what breed gender section of the forum. Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on drumstick diva's suggestion to wait another month before posting for gender identification. Any opinions you get about gender at 3 weeks are likely to be in error. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds (like Buff Orpingtons). :o) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. this is one of our chicks. She's Isabella for now, but might turn in to Ivan :)
