Hi, My name is Justin. I'm moving into the country soon which is going to let me do something I've wanted to do for a long time. Raise chickens. I'm going to be living in southwest Kansas and ever since my decision to move, I've been reading and researching the practice for several hours a day. I never knew how much information was out there. I've found a coop I want to build. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-menagerie but I still haven't decided on a breed. I need one that does well in both hot and cold weather. Kansas weather has a tendency to fluctuate wildly, but the air is always dry which should help keep disease down. We can have very hot summers and very cold winters. This one is supposed to be brutal, but I have some ideas on how to add some heat to the coop. I'm looking for a good dual purpose bird. One that's good for both eggs and meat, weather hardy, and docile. I expect to spend a lot of time with them and would like a friendly bird.

Thanks for reading! I'm sure you'll be hearing from me more soon. Probably with more questions and concerns than anything else. :)

Welcome to BYC, Justin. Glad you decided to join our flock. Based on your criteria and my past experience in Kansas, I would recommend Black Australorps. I raised them in northern Kansas and with a draft free, dry, and well ventilated coop to keep moisture from building up inside it, they had no problems handling the winter there and even laid on the coldest days. They are also very heat resistant and had no problem with Kansas summers. In addition, Australorps are calm and gentle. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) made lap pets of them. And they are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Thanks for the recommendation, Michael. I will definitely consider that. I'm so excited to get started that I might have a tendency to jump the gun so I'm trying to use that motivation to educate myself as much as possible.

Nice to meet you Justin - Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock - so glad you joined up
