Hi,all! I just ordered my very first batch of chickens from Meyer Hatchery! They are schedule to hatch 10/15 and to arrive soon after.
I decided to start with 2 Green Queens, 2 Wyandottes and 2 Cream Legbars.
Information out there can be overwhelming, so I am grateful to have found this forum! Looking forward to becoming a chicken mom!

I’m in SC so I think I’ll try outdoors. My rationale is then they can get the natural day night cycle.

But I’m open to anything! Would indoors be better for them?
Outdoors is always better! What are your temperatures though?

Personally for me, I'm more comfortable brooding inside at first so I can keep a close eye and make sure they're all doing well.

Hello Janet, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

I have never raised chicks indoors and I never would! They will be much healthier being raised outside in a predator proof, weatherproof enclosure with copious amounts of ventilation. I suggest you use a brooder plate instead of a heat lamp and that will make things much safer.

I'm new here too. My chicks are 15 weeks old.

I imagine that if you have a safe predator-proof enclosure set up, and you can check on them frequently outside, it would be fine. They dirty their food and water multiple times a day, and you have to watch for pasty butt.

I raised mine in front of a big window in the living room which made it easier for me to monitor them, but I also kept them inside for 5 weeks, until I felt that they had enough feathers to be warm at night, in my climate.
