In the Brooder
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to owning my own chickens. I have house/pet sat chickens multiple times. When I was very little my grandparents had chickens and I would help collect eggs and run away from the rooster.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I apparently joined the trend and got chicks during this whole COVID stuff. I got 4 chicks from Tractor Supply in late March 2020. They are named after the Four Henchmen of the Apocalypse since they are my Apocalypse Chickens: Pestilence, Death, Famine and Plague. Yes I know I forgot War because Pestilence and Plague are the same but they already own their names.
(3) What breeds do you have?
In theory I have all females, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Production Red and 1 Black Sex Link
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Right now I am really enjoying waking up each morning and noticing how much they have grown and changed. I am thankful that the library still offers kindle books to borrow and I am reading all I can to learn about how to best take care of them.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I also like to foster kittens with my local animal shelter, until this COVID stuff, I had a revolving door of kittens and cats and even some puppies come through my house for various amounts of time. I don't currently have any foster kittens because that takes us to the next question, my job.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I work in the emergency management/disaster field so I am super busy right now! I love my job and feeling like I get to help people and my community during hard times. It is probably due to my job that I have a tendency to make plans, be prepared and push for general self sufficiency. Getting chickens help with my goal to be more self sufficient and to be prepared when its not such a good day.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have been lurking for a couple months now getting ideas and preparing for my chicks but now I got them so I should probably get involved!
