Hello! I have dreamed of having chickens for years and as of this coming Tuesday, my dream will come true with 12 baby chicks arriving in the mail. I never thought I would own a duck but I fell in love with runner ducks and placed an order for three of them. They will arrive mid-May. I am terrified and terribly excited! I also love to garden and am hoping that my little chicks will grow to be good garden buddies making lots of good compost and keeping down the bug population and weeds in my orchard.

I live in the Central Valley of California where we are "enjoying" another very dry year. We are all wishing we could borrow some of the rain that some states have a surplus of right now.

Ducks are great..but not near gardens..lol..as you probably know.
You will love your chickens. Have fun!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! How exciting for you to be starting out on your chicken and duck adventure :celebrate What breeds of chicks are you getting? Have you dropped by the learning centre? Lots of super articles on getting started with your chicks ducklings, here is the link > https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck, raising chicks is a fantastic experience I'm sure ducklings are too but I've never had any but they are very cute. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy your new babies and BYC :frow

Thank you! We are getting 3 Ameraucana Easter Egg Chickens, 4 Barred Rocks, and 5 Rhode Island Reds.

I posted a question in a different thread and would love some input as we have the important decision of housing to make.

I have read through many articles and threads BYC but haven't found anything that directly addresses my question yet. But I've certainly found a bunch of stuff that I'm glad to know and never would have known to ask!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Netting is really only effective against aerial predators, it does little to slow down many of the ground predators digging under or climbing over, especially raccoons. You might consider going with electric fencing around the perimeter also, and make sure there are no overhanging branches for them to get over the fence on.
