Explain the process of incubation?

Have you had a successful hatch rate with a homemade incubator?

  • Yes! (Around 70% or more)

  • It worked at least. (So less or more than 50% of the eggs hatched)

  • Sadly, no. (I'm sorry...)

My daughter and I built an incubator for a science project as well as the fun of hatching our own chicks. ( I wanted to try and get more hens) Why not make it educational right? She built the incubator with little help from me.
Styrofoam cooler
25 watt bulb
fan
thermometer/humidity
bowl/sponge water

Putting it together went fairly easy. Temperature is hard to regulate. I don't work, so I can check on it often and adjust when need to. The hardest thing we are having trouble with is humidity. It stays at around 45%. We live in a high humid region too, so that isn't an issue. I have read varying comments on different sites about humidity and the latest was from this one and I am nervous for the three chicks soon to hatch next week.

Thoughts on this please? Is this bad?

Thanks.

sorry I should have started a new thread. I tried to delete it.. I am new at this forum thing..

Her project went great. She placed 2nd in her class and went to regionals. We hatched 3 chicks and are still with us now and doing great. One was a roo and he was just as aggressive as his father so we got rid of them
Both. Thanks for asking. It was a great experience for both myself and my daughter.
