Hi,

We have a number of chicks, all about 8-9 weeks, and they all do the oddest things with their necks.
When sleeping/resting they stretch their necks out as far as chickenly possible, about 5-6 inches...then either rest it on something, you, another chick etc, or they dangle their heads in mid air. They seem perfectly happy doing this.

We had 2 ISA Browns, and they never did this.

Is this neck chicken trait a common thing?

Tahnks,

Woka

My chickens do this as well. They are probably just getting comfortable to sleep.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Nothing negative has happened to mine as a result of the same behavior.

Mine do something similar.
Whenever I'm holding them they stretch out, legs, wings, necks, and all. It's adorable. I'll see if i can find a picture.

I wasn't worried...I just thought my weirdness had rubbed off onto them...not that I stretch my neck out like that to sleep

We have called one Neck Chicken because she's always doing it at the slightest chance.

My Marans do the whole wing, neck, bum in air thing while stood up. Then they fall asleep and loose their balance and fall over.

Mine did that all the time when they were in the brooder. They might still do it in the coop, because they aren't sitting on the roost yet. The hubby and I always thought it was very cute.

Mine do it too. It looks goofy. I'd like to see a video of your Marans, Woka!

My hen Blanche likes to cuddle on my lap and stretch her neck out until her head is on my shoulder. It makes it appear as though I have wrung her neck.
