Our baby Spook (hatched on Halloween) is a week and a half old. I've taken lots of photos of him/her and often, despite not using the flash, his/her pupils look red. Today as I was holding him/her I noticed the iris of his/her eyes are blue-grey. He/she is the most laid back, gorgeous quail, very like his/her mother. I just wondered if I should be worried at all. Will they darken up (not that it's very noticeable unless the light is hitting it right)? I know he/she can see just fine. Spook hasn't got any spots of colour yet and his/her mother only has a tiny gold mark on the back of her head. Spook's father is a gold italian but must have white in his genes. I haven't hatched very many chicks but I'm sure all the rest had your usual, dark brown eyes.

In this photo, if you make it bigger, you'll see the right pupil looks like it's got 'red-eye'.

The red pupils look like it's just the camera angle. As long as spook can see, it isn't anything to be worried about.

Thanks PeppersMama - that is reassuring. I think I'll just keep him out of strong sunlight perhaps, though at the moment they are inside and they get a bit of afternoon sun which he likes to sit in. He's such a sweetie.
