Eye or sinus infection?

One of my chickens has swelling and solid eye drainage in her right eye. I got some eye antibiotic ointment and some antibiotic to put into the water. Should I separate her from the rest of the flock? And only medicate her water not the whole flocks' water?

Do you see any signs where the eye has been pecked? Is there any sneezing, wheezing, gasping, nasal drainage or other signs of a respiratory disease? MG and coryza are the 2 diseases that can cause eye swelling and pus from sinus infection. If you think it is respiratory in origin, isolate, give some antibiotics such as Tylan or oxyteracycline in the water. Don't medicate the chickens not showing symptoms.

She doesn't seem to be having respiratory problems at all. I assumed her eye had been pecked at first but don,'t really see signs of that. Mainly the swelling and yellow plaques in her eye. Also someclear drainage.

Our chickens have the run of the property and we have no extra shed for her to be separated. Any suggestions how to keep her separate? Once antibiotics are underway how long does she have to be separated?

Can you separate her inside your house? If not, and you don't think it is a respiratory infection, then leave her in the coop. It's always good to keep a dog crate or have a space for a hospital for sick chickens. Get some 50 injectable at your feed store, and a couple of syringes and needles to withdraw the medicine. Give her 1cc or ml twice a day ORALLY for 5 days. That way the other chickens won't get unnecessary antibiotics. If you see any white or yellow gunk in the eye, it needs to be cleaned out with saline, QTips, tweezers, and cotton. Otherwise the eye ointment won't help. If your feed store only has Tylan 200, you can still use it, but only give 1/4 cc or ml.
