Fall egg rate dropping, fertility rising

I believe Japs are single comb, guess they just want to take over the world as soon as spring comes. =p

I had a BO hen setting about 12 eggs, and was really happy as that group is about 2 yrs. old, and I wanted some chicks from them. I brought half the eggs in this weekend to candle, and not one was fertile.

Well, it was actually over half the eggs that ended up being no good. I had left 4 eggs under her------unfortunately, 2 WERE fertile. I thought they were all bad----oh how I wish I would have checed every single one! I nd the 2 chicks in the pen this morning, dead. I think they were at least a couple of days old, and the roo must have killed them. The thing is, it is dark when I go out in the morning to feed and check everyone----that hen is always still sleeping in her house, and it is dark by the time I get home and go out to feed and put everyone to bed-----and that hen is always already in bed. I sleep in on Sat. and Sun., and now wish I didn't. I am so angry at myself. Well, next time I'm going to have the hen that is setting eggs in a pen all her own-------but it won't be until spring.
