We live in New Jersey and we've been talking about getting chickens for a few years and finally pulled the trigger this year!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Brand new! Ordered them in February for a May 16 hatching date.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Well, we ordered 15 but Cackle delivered 17, which makes sense why they do it. We had a few stressed, pasty-butt chicks, but they pulled through after some apple-cider vinegar and a few warm baths. The chicks are two-weeks old and growing fast!
(3) What breeds do you have?
We went with the Buff Orpingtons after consideration. Cold weather tolerant, good demeanor for the kids and most important, good dual-purpose bird.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Going to need some more time to answer this one...
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We are an active family, but we also started a garden as well. It gives myself and the misses another good hobby to do together,
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Family of 5 (two girls and a son) with a fantastic yellow lab. We own a 43 foot 5th wheel and like to use it as much as possible to explore this beautiful country, although diesel prices make that a bit tougher these days.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
This is one of the first sites we came across when we started researching chickens. I decided to design and build our coop myself, so it's been a fun project and we used alot of good information from this site throughout the process. I was actually going to create a post, so decided to register and introduce ourselves to the community.
Here is a picture of the coop and the attached run that is in progress:
