Fans in coops??

Does anyone put fans in the chicken coop during the summer?

I have a fan mounted higher up in my coop and then on hot nights I put a small, battery operated fan in the window going out to pull the heated air and also for more ventilation.

What sort of temperatures do you routinely see in the summer?

In my extremely well-ventilated coop here in central NC, where we routinely see 95+F from late May to mid-September, my chickens do well without any kind of fan.

But if you have to protect against both extreme heat and extreme cold it gets harder to manage. I don't have the link, but we used to have a member here on BYC who built a coop with removable wall panels. It was Open Air all summer but enclosed against severe winters.

There are several of us who use this method. It’s really good for hot climates that also reach freezing temps in winter

Even though my coop is an open air style, I still use a fan at night in summer to move air. It’s important to make sure whatever you put in there is rated for outdoor use. As others have mentioned, the dust collection is horrendous so I wipe it down once a week.

Check Home Depot toward the end of the summer season. I bought two rechargeable batteries for Ryobi tools and basically got a free fan. It can be hung on a wall, from the ceiling, or stand on the floor.

Same. I have this one and it's been working great for pulling hot air out at roost level in the humid summer. My coop is small so it does the trick but if you have a bigger fan, you may need a larger one?

it's been running non stop for almost a year and going strong!
