Hi all, I hatched these 5 chicks 14 days ago (pics taken at 12 days) and I’m wondering if feather sexing is applicable to hybrids/mixes? The mothers are either black or red sex-links and the fathers are either a black sex-link or a light Sussex - I get eggs from my friend’s flock. This is the second time I’ve hatched from them, but I didn’t really note the feathering rate of the first bunch. This time, I noticed right away that 3/5 have really long wing feathers and are already flying out of the brooder - might these be pullets? And the chicks with shorter wings cockerels? Or does the feather sexing only work for certain lines/breeds? Thanks 😊

They are all different looking, you’re trying to compare apples to oranges with all those different breed characteristics 🙃.
That’s what I was wondering…😅 if that only works for pure breeds or specific lines of hybrids selected for fast feathering. I’ve had people tell me it works for all chickens but I was skeptical 🤔

It only works by putting a fast feathering male over a slow feathering female. The mixes you have would not be feather sexable.
Thanks! Guess I’ll just have to be patient and wait. It’s just nice knowing early who NOT to get attached to lol
