All 3 from Ideal, 4 weeks old--were supposed to be sexed. 2 of them look exactly like I expected the pullets to look like. One doesnt look anything like a favorelle pullet or roo--I have no idea what he/she might be. Any guesses/ thoughts? It's also taller by an inch than any other chick in the brooder the same age (ameraucanas, marans, polish)

And here it is next to the other (ameraucana in the corner)

Is it? What about the one in the corner then? I got 2 that look dark, exactly like that and they are supposed to be Ameraucanas...they look entirely different.

Full body pictures of the favorelle would help to determine gender. From that picture I'd say pullet though. Beautiful chicks. The other two appear to be pullets as well, but full body pictures would help there too.

I'll try to get a couple--these guys (girls, hopefully) were completely spazzing when I was trying to get a couple of pics. I'll post what I can tomorrow to give a fuller view.

Ideal doesn't have Ameraucanas, they have Easter Eggers. EEs can come in any color or pattern, muffed or not, most have green legs and they lay green, blue, brown or tinted eggs. You can get true Ameraucanas through Cackle, MPC and Meyer but they are $15-20 more per sexed chick.

This is so helpful and interesting, thank you! So sounds like the two can both essentially be EE and look wildly different...

EE's can pretty much be any color. A lot are red with black in their hackles - I've got a Cochin/EE cross chick that looks like that, right now. My other EE's are sort of a lavender or blue dirty Colombian, a blue with orange leakage, and a pale lavender splash - so far I only know what color one of them lays, but she lays a very nice blue pullet egg. It seems to me that most hatcheries are moving toward calling them Easter Eggers, but there are still a few... like Ideal... that call them Americanas, Americaunas, Ameraucanas... or something similar. Which creates a lot of confusion in those who get them, and can't figure out why they aren't one of the accepted breed colors.

I have five little Lavender Ameraucana Bantam chicks right now, who are just over a week old. They're not a recognized Ameraucana color... but there are people working to get it recognized. Unlike an EE who I wouldn't have any idea what color egg to expect from, I know that any pullets will lay a blue egg, and they hatched with consistent color, pea combs, tiny muffs, and future beards.
