I am a new chicken owner. I ordered (among other breeds) 3 favorolles, 2 hens, 1 rooster. I am curious about one chick, The two "normal" chicks are yellow, 1 marked rooster, the other a hen, are yellow and have some black/some white wing feathers coming in. The one I am questioning is grayish and yellow, and has only white wing feathers coming in. She has the feathered legs, however she only has 4 toes instead of the 5 a fav. should have. She does not show any signs of a "beard" yet but then neither does the rooster. Anyone have any ideas about this chick? Is she just an odd-ball, a mutt, a poorly bred fav.?

How long have you had them, and have the hens been with any other roosters?

It will take a while for the beard/muffs to develop....sounds like poorly bred Favs, it happens a lot with hatchery stock, but don't get discouraged, they're still so young...of course, she won't grow an extra toe ;) but they will change dramatically....

I am not convinced that these are Faverolles that are being described. They should be born with beards and muffs. Mine had so much fluff that I actually had to trim their muffs back so that they didn't get into their poor little eyes.

It's possible that we are talking about severely poor breeding, but even hatcheries are able to get muffs right, it's a dominant trait.:

Hmmm, interesting. I bought my SFs from a reputable breeder here on BYC and at 2 weeks they didn't seem to have a lot of "facial hair".... at least, I don't think they did....

beards/muffs (also crest on any crested breed) can be seen on day old chicks so more than likely if they dont have it as a day old then they more than likely will not develop one ever and i dont think that chick is a fav. but it would greatly help if you did post some pics
