Hello all, I was hoping some of you lovely people could help me as I'm worried about my two hens. They live all year round in a hutch & good sized run and appeared to be very happy with it in the year I have had them. I got them as my 1st hens at the point of lay and have consistently had an egg each per day since. A couple of weeks ago I went away for a week ensuring they had plenty of fresh water in their tank and plenty of food. When I came back they appeared to stop laying, in fact the day I got back there were a dozen eggs waiting for me which tells me they carried on as normal. Their food & water had gone down to the levels expected also.

In the week since I got back, for the 1st few days "Roxy" the more active of the two seemed a little off and spent a couple of days in the laying box sulking (but not laying) and only coming out a couple of times in those days to pick at some layers pellets and have a sip of water. After that she came out, did an almighty stinky turd and seems to be okay, until today when she appears to be either malting or pulling out her feathers or both, in the picture you can see she's almost bald on her lower back. The other hen, "Rainbow" has for the last four days taken on the sulking role and sits constantly in the laying box (also not laying), twitching a little and again, only coming out for a slight nibble & sip. She hasn't lost any feathers. She's normally very skittish and would bolt if I came anywhere near her but when I lift up the nesting box lid she doesn't seem to care that I'm there and is very docile, until I get too close and she goes to peck me in defence. She's sat sulking in the other photo and as you can see, her comb seems a healthy colour and she's not appearing to lose any weight.

Please can somebody help as I'm still new to this. Is it normal behaviour? what could be the issue? are they suffering?

I don't think there is anything wrong with them. They sound like they are both broody. If you google a broody hen, you will probably find that your hens are acting like what you read. They are trying to be mamas. While they are broody, they stop laying and pull out their feathers on their chest. You can break a broody hen by putting her in a wire bottom crate in a cool area. Google on how to break a broody hen and you will find out more info. I use the wire crate method and it works like a charm.

Hi Jen, thanks for such a quick response. I Googled this and and here's the 1st link I found: http://www.chickeneggspert.com/chicken-behavior/hens-acting-broody/33.asp

"Rainbow" is demonstrating all this behaviour apart from the plucking but the weird thing is that there are no eggs beneath her!? Neither her or "Roxy" are laying and it's Roxy who's pulling out her feathers and not appearing to brood. What I have done tonight is put some food in the nesting box with Rainbow and she has wolfed it down with Roxy letting her do so (Roxy is usually the 1st to pig out and Rainbow doesn't get a look in). If Rainbow is brooding, how long does this normally last? Also, what do you suppose is Roxy's feather plucking issue?

Check them over for mites, that might be a feather plucking problem. If you allow it it will last for 21 days and they won't lay any eggs. Mine didnt have any eggs under her either but she thought there was lol. You can either break them of it or let them go through the process. It can be hard on them, so I would just break it. Maybe the other one wants her spot so she's trying to get her out by pulling her feathers???? Just speculation though. Check them at night for mites.

Sounds like broody to me...they don't need eggs under them to go broody, and the feather plucking could be to line the nest.

Either get them some fertile eggs to hatch out or break them, they won't necessarily stop being broody in 21 days (the length of time it takes to incubate eggs) if there are no chicks to take care of.

Oh....also, if they are around 18 months old they may also be going into their first full adult molt.
