Thought I would drop a note to introduce myself. I am in he process of getting ready for my first chickens in the near future. I have decided to stick to laying hens for the time being. I have an OverEZ coop arriving soon and so I have been planning the location and construction for the run. Many things to initially consider as we have many predators in our area that frankly like chicken. Since I am planning for 4 hens and the possibility of expanding my run will end up being 6'x12' and 7' high. I am placing the coop and run on the south side of my shed which will block the girls from the cold northern winds we get. That should place the coop and run in a nice location to get sun between sunrise and 1pm. Then shaded in the afternoon, as the placement is on the woodline with mature tree protecting it.

What I am not sure of is what to do to prevent the bottom sill of the walls from rotting over time? I am planning to use pressure treated boards throughout with a slanted roof. The ground is slightly higher that the area around it so water would have a less chance to pool.

Also, not really sure on what breeds of chicken work well together, as well as, have a very nice longevity and egg production?
