Do chickens have a second molt in the fall? For about a week 3 out of 5 girls are majorly shedding....or should I be keeping a close eye out for some other kind of issue?

They are molting, nothing to be concerned about.
Chickens typically molt in fall and again in spring. Some lose a ton of feathers at once and others can take weeks to lose their feathers.

Thank you, thank you. I have really had some hard lessons in chicken raising this summer, but these 5 older ones have always been healthy. I am getting a bit panicky, so I appreciate the reassurance!

i have a barred rock and a BO that just started molting.. hard.. feathers everywhere!!!! and some bare butts.. so i have a couple fall molters.. their first too..

How old are your birds?

Chickens typically molt in fall and again in spring.

Adult birds only molt once a year. Chicks go thru 3 juvenile molts between hatch and 6 months old.

In my experience fall has been the major molt time for adult birds. Some molt gradually, and others blow almost all of their feathers all at once.

Well if that's true someone should tell my birdsbecause they are two years old and still molt twice a year.
