My Coop
My Coop
Hi.

At least six of my chickens are molting, and there are feathers everywhere. What do y'all do with the ones that land in the coop and get mixed up with their bedding? Can I just leave them there or should I remove them?

Most of mine usually fall on the poop deck so those are easily removed. But I have 34 chicken 30 of which are molting. I just leave the ones that make it to the floor until I figure their about done or I switch from pine bedding to straw. I do however sweep up the ones in the run every other day or so. That way my neighbors dont think I'm slaughtering birds or something should they wander over.

The only feathers that get removed from my coop and run, are the ones that are on the poop board when I scoop.

I have 2 dozen going naked. I just use my manure rake and sift them all out. They're great for the compost pile. On a good windy day, I can open the doors and windows and let them blow through and out. Neighbors LOVE that! I swear it looks like a sleep-over pillow fight gone bad for the past couple of weeks.
